Hope for Children In Haiti

UNICEF Bulgaria joined the international efforts to support children in Haiti and launched an emergency fundraising campaign on 22nd January 2010.

The campaign HOPE FOR CHILDREN IN HAITI has collected so far 1 million 600 thousand BGN. Only for one evening many Bulgarians from all over the country - not only businessmen but pensioners and children as well - gave a little hope for the children in Haiti.

The campaign was also supported by famous performers on the Bulgarian musical stage and well-known TV hosts and actors. The concert was mediated by Ani Salich and the bTV reporter Genka Shikerova reported on air from the hall the answering of the donors' calls. In a conversation with her, the actor Lyubomir Neykov said that a large part of the donations were made by people of pension age, others chose to make calls reciting verses.

The collected amounts were allocated according to the commitments of UNICEF to the children in Haiti for provision of tarpaulin tents, safe water, water purification tablets, 'school in a box' kit, food for children suffering of malnutrition, protection of orphaned children, various vaccines. The UNICEF funds raising campaign for the children in Haiti continued until March 15.
