UNICEF Bulgaria telethon advocated for “All children together form kindergarten”
More than 100 popular public figures from television, music, theatre, sports joined forces in a live concert in the prime-time of Bulgaria’s most highly-rated TV channel
Bulgaria, 1 December 2015 – The team of UNICEF in Bulgaria realized a very successful Telethon on Saturday evening (November 28, 2015) in the prime-time of the biggest and most influential TV channel in the country – bTV. In a pro-bono opportunity, supported by UNICEF biggest corporate partner, for 2 and a half hours of advocacy and fund-raising millions of viewers were reached and thousands were engaged. More than 16 000 pledge donors committed to donate monthly through their mobile phones so that UNICEF and partners can create and implement in the next 2 years a demonstration model for inclusive environment in kindergartens for children with specific needs, including children with disabilities.
That is why over 100 popular public figures from television, music, theatre, sports joined forces in a live concert in the prime-time of Bulgaria’s most highly-rated TV channel. Among them – sending her message – was the Vice President of the European Commission Ms. Kristalina Georgieva who is in charge of Budget and Human Resources. The Telethon also demonstrated an ethical approach for media reporting on vulnerable children with specific needs.
The latest public-opinion survey conducted by the State Agency for Child Protection shows that 65% of the respondents did not want children with mental disabilities to study and be part of their child’s class, and 20% did not want their children to study alongside children with physical disabilities. Therefore, more than 8 000 children with specific needs end up being completely excluded from society when it comes to access to quality education, early learning and socialization in kindergartens and afterwards – in schools. The reasons for that are rooted in prejudice, lack of understanding and absence of supportive and inclusive environment.
The UNICEF supported demonstration model of inclusive kindergartens includes ensuring of accessible physical environment, individual consultations with specialists for children with specific needs and support for their families; trainings of teachers, principals, and hiring of more staff in kindergartens so there is an caring approach towards #EveryChild’s individual needs. Alongside with the “Future free of violence for every child” concert at the end of January 2015 UNICEF in Bulgaria got 3000 minutes air prime time in the highest rated TV channel in Bulgaria and recruited nearly 40 000 pledge donors.
