WHY:UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake is visiting Bulgaria to see first-hand the country’s progress in Child care reform for children and families. He will meet with Government representatives to discuss key challenges for children – one of the highest poverty and social exclusion rates in Europe, with major inequalities among different groups – and to advocate for sustained investment in early childhood development especially for the children who are furthest behind. At highest risk are Roma children, children with disabilities, and children in institutional care.
Within its current programme of cooperation, UNICEF supports the Government of Bulgaria in enhancing national capacities for social inclusion and reduction of child poverty; ensuring equal access for every child to education, health and protection services; and strengthening child rights monitoring systems.
About Anthony Lake:
Anthony Lake became UNICEF’s sixth Executive Director on 1 May 2010, bringing to the position more than 45 years of public service. His commitment to tackling inequity and spearheading UNICEF’s progress on delivering results for the most disadvantaged children has been at the forefront of his tenure.
UNICEF promotes the rights and wellbeing of every child, in everything we do. Together with our partners, we work in 190 countries and territories to translate that commitment into practical action, focusing special effort on reaching the most vulnerable and excluded children, to the benefit of all children, everywhere.
